Bean Bag Toss Game
| [unknown placeholder $article.art_field4$] |
Bean Bag Toss is a very old game known under different names such as Corn Toss, Bean Toss, Soft Horsehoes and Cornhole among others. It is similar to Horseshoe toss however is more versatile and can be played by younger children as the bags are safer to throw around than heavy horseshoes. Its origins are unclear; one hypothesis is that it started in the 14th Century in Germany.
Bean Bag Toss is played like horseshoes except a platform is used as the target instead of a metal stake and you toss small bags instead of a horseshoe. The bags can contain dried beans, corn or synthetic materials. The top of the platform has a hole and the goal of the game is to toss your bag into this hole or as close to it as possible. Some platforms have lines drawn with different point sections marked. There are a variety of bags and platforms available for sale or you can make your own.
Typically Cornole platforms are raised at one end that has one hole at the top. The amount of points awarded greatly varies. Most commonly one point is awarded if you hit the platform and 3 if you get the bag in the hole. Sometimes a cap is put on the number of points to determine the winner, for example the first to get to 21 points wins.
Some platforms also have lines which mark different point sections, the closer you get to the hole the more points you score. Some Children's Bean Bag Toss games have 9 holes arranged in a square, the middle one being worth more points. Other variations include different sized holes, painted saucers as targets… etc. Many sets with pictures, sports teams or themes are available. For example a picture of a clown painted on a platform with the eyes and mouth cut out.
When there are several players, often two platforms are set up (typically 30 feet apart)and one team throws from behind or next to the opposite teams platform. You can use as many or few bags as you like (it just depends on how often you want to go back and retrieve them) but 4 is usual.
